Dachshunds - Information - History

Dachshunds originated in Germany in the 15th century. Their shape was initially meant to serve the purpose of digging and moving in tunnels towards a badger burrow.

In 1887, Dachshunds were brought to the US and gained great popularity there and in other countries. However, during the First World War everything connected with Germany caused irritation and hatred. The number of Dachshund dogs decreased. It took years to restore the genetic pool of the breed and recover the Dachshund's popularity.

Dachshunds - Information - Grooming

The grooming requirements depend on the size and the type of coat in Dachshunds. All Dachshund dogs, irrespective of their coat length and size, should be vetted on a regular basis. Their ears and skin should be inspected for fleas and ticks. The nails ought to be clipped, if the dog does not wear them down running on hard surfaces. It is advisable to brush the dog's teeth to prevent toothache and infections.

The smooth-coated Dachshund requires minimum maintenance. Brushing three times a week and bathing once a month or less will be sufficient to keep the dog clean and healthy. The longhaired Dachshunds, as well as the wirehaired require more attention, naturally. Their coats need brushed more frequently: every time you see the coat looks dull, give it some extra brushing and remove the long hairs.

Dachshunds - Information - Health Problems

One common health hazard in Dachshunds is disc problems. This spinal disease can cause paralyses and therefore, is very dangerous. The ruptured disc can show in crying, refusing to go upstairs and reluctance to jump and run. Such symptoms should urge you to take your dog to the vet. In most cases, this disease can be successfully cured. However, if surgery is needed, the recovery process can be longer and more painful.

Obesity is the disease that leads to a number of other serious ailments. It is in the owner's power not to overfeed the Dachshund. This way, the Dachshund is less likely to be prone to heart disease or disc problems.

Thyroid disease and Progressive Eye Atrophy are the diseases that can be found in the Dachshund. Therefore, it is essential to check for genetic diseases when you buy a puppy. Generally speaking, Dachshunds don't have many genetic problems, back problems being the only serious disease associated with Dachshunds.
