Dachshunds - Information - Why You Should Consider Breeding Your Dog

It is vitally important to breed only healthy Dachshunds. No genetic disease or temperament problem must be inherited by the offspring. For example, there must be no history of eye disease, disc disease or skin infections in several generations of Dachshunds meant for breeding, not to mention the sire and dam themselves. The sire must be at least two years old and the dam should reach the age of 12 months to be bred.

Both parents should not only be tested for possible ailments and conditions, but also closely examined by the breeder for him to introduce necessary corrections in the breeding program. For instance, if both parents are undersized, the puppies are most likely to inherit this undesirable trait as well. In other words, a detailed research of the pedigree is a must for everyone who strives for improvement of the Dachshund breed.

Be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time looking for potential owners of your Dachshund pups and be ready to run into expenses in order to vaccinate and care for both parents and puppies.

Your Dachshund should be registered with the Kennel Club of your country. Most dogs in the pedigree list should be champions in fieldwork, obedience or conformation. This way, you breed potential champion Dachshunds too.
