Dachshund Training
Dachshund training is very important since the early age of the dog. Like all hounds, these little dogs are fearless, courageous, intelligent, and independent – features essential for a hunting dog, but making these dogs difficult to keep as family companions. Dachshunds need plenty of communication and constant mental and physical stimulation. The role of a lap dog is not for them. They enjoy active games, seeing new places, and meeting new people.
Lack of Dachshund training is the main reason for surrendering dogs of this breed into rescues. Since this breed is very popular, many people buy Dachshund puppies on impulse and don’t know what to do when it grows up with no socialization and obedience training. It can take much time to housebreak and train these dogs. Some Dachshund puppies are difficult to housetrain and make their owners frustrated. Without early training, Dachshund dogs tend to develop various bad habits. They tend to bark, dig, chew on everything, and jump up at people. Some Dachshunds become territorial, hyper protective, and mischievous.
Dachshunds are popular as family pets mostly because of their comical and entertaining personality. They are easy to keep in an apartment and don’t require a yard, if given enough exercise outdoors. Dachshund dogs usually live a long life and form close bonds with the family. Dachshund training is not for anyone. These dogs need a patient, calm, loving, but firm owner. A person who is gone long hours is not the right owner for a Dachshund. Families with babies and small children should not consider obtaining a pet of this breed, as Dachshunds are not very good with children. Novice owners will surely find it difficult to train a Dachshund puppy.
A Dachshund puppy is not the right choice for you if you don’t want to deal with suspiciousness towards strangers and other dogs, stubbornness, excessive barking, doggy odor, and frequent brushing and trimming (for long-haired and wire-haired dogs.) Dachshunds are prone to serious spinal problems and the owner has to be ready to pay vet bills. Unfortunately, Dachshund training cannot eliminate all problems associated with this breed.
