Dachshund Rescue

In a Dachshund rescue, you can find many adult and senior dogs surrendered by their owners. Unfortunately, it’s typical of all popular breeds. Many people buy a purebred puppy or dog of a popular breed and then surrender it to the rescue or shelter, because they were not ready to keep it. The Dachshund is very popular in the USA, so, it often shows up in rescues and shelters.

The most common reasons for giving a dog up to the Dachshund rescue are difficulties with training and housebreaking. Though very intelligent and independent, these dogs tend to be stubborn and self-assured. They need a firm owner and regular consistent training. Often, a professional is needed to give a Dachshund puppy obedience lessons. Separation anxiety is another problem with this breed. If a Dachshund is often left alone, it develops bad habits, such as barking, howling, chewing, and digging. Dachshund puppies can be very destructive.

Often, a purebred dog gets into the Dachshund rescue through no fault of its own, but because the owner passes away or moves to where pets are not allowed. Some Dachshunds are surrendered because of a new baby in the family. This breed is not suited for families with small children, because all Dachshunds like being in a center of attention and feel jealous when the bulk of attention is given to the child. It often leads to frustration, behavior problems, and sometimes to aggression. Some Dachshunds show up in a rescue as stray dogs. Like all hounds, Dachshunds are very inquisitive. They like to follow interesting scents and may get lost.

Adopting a purebred dog from a rescue is a very serious responsibility and a long-term commitment. Though normally, all rescue dogs are given basic obedience training, the owner has to treat a rescue Dachshund as a puppy until it becomes reliable and trustworthy. Not any person can adopt a Dachshund. Rescue workers interview all perspective adopters and organize home visits to make sure that all dogs find responsible owners. Depending on the age and health condition of the dog, new owners have to pay a donation fee to the Dachshund rescue.
