Dachshunds - Information - General Information

Dachshunds originated in Germany about 300 years ago. These dogs were bred particularly to hunt badgers. Therefore, the Dachshund translates as the "badger dog" in German. Other names that refer to the Dachshund dog are Dachels, Dachsels, Teckels and the Sausage Dog.

Dachshunds are sometimes bred for hunting purposes nowadays, as well. Their acute sense of smell and inborn courage make them excellent hound dogs. Dachshunds are lively intelligent dogs, whose slightly comic appearance and unique guarding skills make them extremely popular family pets.

Dachshunds - Information - Temperamental Traits

Dachshunds are famous for being extremely devoted to their owners. These dogs are very brave and protective when it comes to their family. Due to their loud voice, which seems to be coming from a far larger dog, the Dachshund's barks can scare anyone.

Dachshunds are friendly companions and are likely to follow you everywhere. They are amiable, good-humored and affectionate on the one hand, but might display jealousy, on the other. However, Dachshunds are rather independent by nature, as they were bred to do a job no other dog breed was capable of doing.
